Ecological performance indexes of Zaporizhstal JSC for 2009
Dear Ladies and Gentlemen! The year 2009 was for Zaporizhstal JSC, as well as for many companies and enterprises of Ukraine and the whole world, not so simple and was, first of all, a struggle for economic indices. It is especially pleasant to say, that in such an economically hard time, Zaporizhstal JSC has not lost positions in the struggle for an ecological quality component of productive activity. Ecological monitoring of the nature protection equipment operation, analysis of the technological processes on basic and fuel-using equipment during production reduction of the main types of products, allow to work out and introduce measures to reduce harmful influence on all the environment components. Zaporizhstal has concluded a contract on designing, manufacturing and equipment delivery of dust-gas cleaning of technological gases from sintering machine ¹1 in the sintering plant. Data on emissions of harmful substances into atmosphere, discharge into reservoirs and waste management in 2009 can be seen below.

Reduction of emissions of harmful substances in 2009 in comparison with 2008 is connected with carrying out repairs and adjustment of gas-cleaning equipment, ecological and heat engineering tests and adjustment of processes of the combustion procedure on fuel-using equipment, with reduction of production on all the process stages and others. Gross emissions of harmful substances into atmosphere have reduced in 2009 by 11977 tons, including dust by 1603 tons and gaseous impurities by 10374 tons. The general decrease in emissions of harmful substances into atmosphere is 17.23 % Specific emissions into atmosphere per ton of produced steel in 2009 have totaled to 17.6 kg/ton.

As a result of carrying out repair work of the water-treatment equipment, reduction of production, effect on water objects in 2009 was characterized by the decrease of harmful substances into the return water flowing into the water reservoir by 22 %. Discharge of harmful substances into the Dnieper River at the Works in comparison with 2008 has reduced by 4257 tons and the volume of discharged return waters has reduced by 6,541 mln m3.
The activity concerning waste management in 2009 was characterized by decrease in quantity of formed waste connected with production decrease. 3424.8 thou tons of waste was formed, including 1744.9 thousand tons of metallurgical slag. Due to loss of production, the volume of formed waste in comparison with 2008 has decreased by 684 thou tons, including 287 000 tons of slag. 1394.350 thou tons of waste has been used at the Works, including 721.155 thou tons of waste was realized, including 1311.317 thou tons was sent for storage, including 280,145 thousand tons was delivered to the slime removal complex outside the territory of the Works, 815,537 thousand tons was delivered to the industrial waste grounds at gully Srednya. On 7-10 April the XII International Exhibition-Fair “Ecology-2009” took place in Kiev in Expocenter “NAUKA” of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. The exhibit of Zaporizhstal JSC stood out among the others as well as the contribution of the citizens of Zaporozhye to environmental protection. This was noticed not only by ordinary visitors but also by the Main Ecological Inspector of Ukraine Nikolay Kostrov. Technologies introduced by Zaporizhstal could have been useful for other metallurgical plants too. He underlined: “
at present all the metallurgical enterprises of Ukraine have certain ecological problems. Each of them has its own peculiarities. For some time I lived in Zaporozhye. What I saw previously and what can be seen today are two incomparable things in respect of the influence of Zaporizhstal on the environment. This indicates that the Works considers the problem of ecology most seriously, with real understanding of these problems, introducing new technologies
.” In 2008 at the Works an Integrated Management System of Quality, Environmental Protection and Labour Safety was introduced. In October 2008 the Works underwent certified audit and received a Certificate of conformity of the IMS of Quality, Environmental Protection and Labour Safety of the Works to the requirements of international standards ISO 9001:2000, ISO 14001:2004, ÎÍSÀS 18001:2007, ILO-OSH 2001. In October 2009 the first supervising audit was passed and the Works confirmed the conformity of the Integrated System of Management with the international standard. This is an acknowledgement of an effectively chosen ecological policy, high level of ecological conscience and production culture. In January 2010 in the House of receptions of the government of Ukraine (Kiev) in the framework of the All-Ukrainian project “Ecology, environment and exploitation of natural resources in Ukraine” the Works has been noted by an award in the nomination “For implementation of modern ecologically safe technologies”. The diploma from the Ministry of environmental protection of Ukraine was signed by the Minister G. Filipchuk, on behalf of VR of Ukraine concerning the ecological policy, exploitation of natural resources and liquidation of consequences of the Chernobyl accident — the Chairman of committee A. Semenoga. |
